When you choose hiking and trekking as a part of your Tanzania Adventure, you have a multitude of destinations to choose from.
Most travellers will include some hiking in a larger package, and you might want to do hiking or walking safaris in one of the parks or reserves, but then you’ll have to be escorted by armed rangers due to the wildlife present.
Your budget will also affect your choices, Mt. Kilimanjaro is rather expensive, but the other destinations like Usambara Mountains or Uluguru Mountains are cheap.
Climbing/Hiking destinations in Tanzania:
Mt. Kilimanjaro
Mount Kilimanjaro is the continents highest peak, and one of Africa’s most magnificent sighs. The highest freestanding mountain in the world, rising from cultivated farmlands, through lush rainforest to alpine meadows, and at last in between lunar landscape up to the twin summits of Kibo (5.895 m) and Mawenzi (5.149 m) peaks.
Mt. Meru
More then 400 species of animals and birds make their home at the slopes of Mount Meru. Thus all trekking here have to be accompanied by an armed ranger. Elephant, buffalo, baboon, warthog, duiker and black- and white colobus monkeys are amongst the wildlife registered here.
Usambara Mountains
By some called the Switzerland of Tanzania, and as a part of the Eastern Arc mountains, this area give you a multitude of destinations and treks to choose amongst. You can do your hiking in the West Usambara, East Usambara or in Amani Forest Reserve, or a combination of them all.
Crater Highlands
The beautiful and rugged Crater Highlands offer you and your fellow hikers an elevated range of volcanoes, intact and collapsed ones, as a chain along the eastern side of Ngorongoro Conservation Area, rising up from The Great Rift Valley.
Uluguru Mountains
South and east of Morogoro, the agricultural main city in Tanzania, bordering to Mikumi National Park and Selous Game Reserve, the intriguing Uluguru Mountains lure you into its rainforest, birdlife and peak after peak of lulling green tops.
How to get there:
Arrival by international flight to Dar es Salaam, Arusha or Zanzibar, then transfer by small airplane, bus or by road to your chosen destination.
What to do:
Depending on your choice, hiking in Tanzania are almost always combined with wildlife safaris.
Mountains like Uluguru and Usambara also give you a unique option for real cultural experiences.
When to go:
The best trekking seasons are the dry and are in the period from mid-December to February, and the cooler, but still dry months from June to October.
Mid-March to Mid-May is the least favourable period, but most treks are still possible if you don’t mind rain and muddy, slippery trails.
